Welcome
The Bkejwanong Children's Centre,
formerly the Walpole Island Day Nursery, has been
providing child care services to the Walpole Island
First Nation members since 1968. Our centre in committed
to offering child care programs of the highest quality.
Our community boasts to have had
the first day care on a First Nation in Canada. We have
since expanded our building to meet the demanding needs
of our community.
On April 8, 1968, the Walpole
Island First Nation Band Council formed a Day Nursery
Committee which consisted of seven women: Mrs. Geraldine
Peters, Chairperson; Mrs. Blackbird; Mrs. Roberta
Jacobs; Mrs. Georgina Tooshkenig; Mrs. Delores Isaac;
Mrs. Reta Sands; and Mrs. Dorothy White. All were
responsible for the establishment of the first Day
Nursery on a Canadian Indian reserve. Simultaneously,
three community members went away for training: Harriet
Jacobs and Calvena Dooley attended Mohawk College to
obtain their Early Childhood Education and Rhonda Roy
(nee Sands) completed a Nursery-Aide course in Toronto.
The programs are staffed with
fully qualified Early Childhood Educator and Assistants
who are dedicated to providing the best possible program
for each
child.
At Bkejwanong Children's Centre,
the child will experience many positive learning
experiences within a nurturing environment.
You can have confidence in knowing
that the centre meets all regulations and standards as
determined by the Ontario Government's Ministry of
Community and Social Services. Bkejwanong Children's
Centre meets all governmental licensing standards.
